A unique place to live and play
With numerous historic homes, Janes Island State Park, and abundant seafood, Somerset County is a unique place to live and play. The Somerset County Arts Council is the hub of the arts scene, offering classes and camps and supporting arts organizations and arts-related activities countywide.
Festivals abound, with 4th Saturday Bay Strolls, the annual Strawberry Festival, a pow-wow hosted each year by the Accohannock Tribe, and the Labor Day Skipjack Race on Deal Island as well as a two-day Plein Air festival, National Hard Crab Derby and New Year’s Eve Oyster Drop in Crisfield and (stuffed) Muskrat Drop in Princess Anne.
The Somerset County Historical Society is the best place to learn more about the history of the maritime industry in the county, and it hosts regular tours and events from its headquarters in the Teakle Mansion in Princess Anne. The J. Millard Tawes Museum, the Ward Brothers Home Place and Workshop, and Smith Island are all attractions that are worth the trip to this unique corner of Maryland.
