As the founding of St. Mary’s County approaches its 400th anniversary, the arts are flourishing.
St. Mary's City, the Colonial Capital of Maryland, comes alive every summer with performances by the Chesapeake Orchestra during the River Concert Series. This spectacular program has drawn a half-million visitors to Southern Maryland over the last 20 years.
Leonardtown, the county seat, is the county’s Arts & Entertainment District. The North End Gallery, in Leonardtown, has been the cornerstone of the town’s revitalization for the past 30 years. The historic town square comes alive on First Fridays and during many cultural events throughout the year. Lexington Park, home of the Newtowne Players, is also experiencing a renaissance. And the St. Mary's County Arts Council is partnering with the Community Development Corporation to produce a series of public art projects. The county is growing and the arts are thriving in St. Mary's County!
